Wedding Songs – Choosing Hymns for a Religious Ceremony
Posted by admin No Comments
When choosing wedding songs for a church ceremony you will normally be asked to choose traditional hymns by the officiant. Hymns are an important part of any religious wedding service and if you choose the right ones there will be the sound of uplifting voices resounding around the church on your wedding day.
A traditional order of service for a church wedding will include space for two or three hymns. When making your choices you should consider where in the service they will be sung as their position in the service can dictate whether they are a joyful hymn full of gusto or something rather more quiet and reflective. Whatever you decide on though, you should discuss your choices with your wedding officant before making a final decision.
The wedding songs you choose should be familiar to your guests. There will be nothing worse during ceremony than your guests mumbling their way through a hymn because they don’t know it! Some churches can provide the services of a choir which may be worth paying extra for if you at all concerned about the collective singing abilities of your guests!
Your choice of hymns also needs to be known to the organist if your church has one. Choosing something very obscure could mean they don’t have the music available or they may not be able to play it.
If your church don’t have hymn books or don’t have enough to go around then you will need to print the words in your wedding programs. You may want to do this anyway particularly if you intend your wedding program to be kept as a keepsake. Find if you will need to pay a fee to reprint the words of your chosen wedding songs as there may be a copyright fee payable to do so. Your wedding officiant should be able to advise you on this.
Here are a few suggestions for traditional wedding hymns to help inspire you:

- At the Name of Jesus
- I Danced in The Morning (Lord of the Dance)
- Love Divine, all loves excelling
- The Lord’s my Shepherd
- Dear Lord and Father of Mankind
- Praise My Soul, the King of Heaven
- Lead Us, Heavenly Father, Lead Us
- All People That on Earth Do Dwell
- Immortal, Invisible
