One More Peek at Bedknobs and Broomsticks

A 1971 family entertainment movie, Bedknobs and Broomsticks tells about a story that takes place during World War II in London. In an effort to keep their children safe, parents send them to the countryside, far from where the bombings are. Three siblings, Charlie, Carrie and Paul are sent to stay with a novice spinster witch, Eglantine Price. The children are not too thrilled to be with her, and neither was she.
One day, Eglantine falls from her magic broomstick while doing her “rounds.” The children have witnessed the incident and try to blackmail her into giving them something to keep them from spilling her secret. Left with no choice, she places a magic traveling spell on a bedknob which, if twisted three times, will allow them to travel to different places by flying on a bed.
Their first expedition was to London to meet with Eglantine’s professor, Emelius Browne. In the professor’s home they find a magical book where they discover Astoroth’s spellbook and find the magic words: Treguna Mekoides Tracorum Satis Dee, for “substitutiary locomotion” – a spell that can help the Allies win the war. After many unsuccessful attempts, Eglantine finally casts the “substitutary locomotion” spell on some weapons and uniforms in the castle and brings them to life. Upon seeing strange and magical cavaliers and guards, the Nazis retreat and leave the city.
Although often set in comparison with a similar movie, Mary Poppin, Bedknobs and Broomsticks presents some rather amusing and comical scenes, especially when Eglantine was trying in vain to master her spells and witchcraft. The thrill and excitement was always there, particularly when they went to the Island of Naboomboo interacting with animals that talked and played soccer games.
A movie full of charm, vividness and creative animation, it makes us wonder why the movie has been unfairly underrated. Bedknobs and Broomsticks is a true classic that deserves more than the credit it has been given. This is a perfect Halloween time movie for young kids, get it this year for your gang.
