Before You Change Careers – A Just in Case Career Change Plan
Posted by tiffany No Comments
It seems that whenever our Career decisions go wrong we always seem to need a Back Up Plan? If you see yourself in this situation start by considering these 6 controlling factors.
Start by considering these 6 controlling factors;
- What could Backfire? – what could go wrong.
- What are your Limits? – money, time, help etc.
- Who might be your Adversaries? – get mad st you.
- Will you Drift? – are you committed.
- What might Shift? – change.
- What might Escalate? – speed up, slow down.
To plan for Backfires, start by listing what’s likely to happen if you’re Plan fails. Make a list of possible Backfires and their likely outcomes if one or more of them happen.
Next consider what your Limits are if your Plan Fails, consider how long you can go under those conditions.
Than, ask yourself who are you likely to make an Adversary of, if you make this decision?
Follow that by taking a personal assessment, how committed are you to this decision, are you likely to Drift from option to option are are you rock solid on your chosen path.
What will you do if something in your Plan Shifts or Changes? Maybe you’re new Company falls into a crises the very day you start and they need you to work nights instead of days, what’s that do to your Plan?
What if your timeline Escalates, and they say they need you tomorrow or not at all, but you can’t quit until next week? Or maybe things slow down, faster than you thought.
Summary
Before You Change Careers – create a Just In Case Career Change Plan that consists of considering what might Backfire (don’t like the new job). What are your Limits? (cash on hand, available time etc.) Who is likely to become an Adversary (spouse, boss, kids)? Are you likely to Drift from option to option, or are you serious about making a commitment? What will you do if something Shifts (expectations, resources, etc.) And finally what will you do if you’re Timeline Escalates? (speeds up or slows down). Take the time to create a solid plan that can survive a Career Change.
